Whitetail Deer
We offer some of the best deer hunting in the world. We have put together the best genetics in the country to produce a trophy deer herd superior to any other. A hunter's chances of seeing a trophy deer are much greater at Double J than many other ranches of its kind. There are two main types of hunting for whitetail deer at Double J. Preserve hunting is done in our specially managed piece of property that combines whitetail deer from Northern, Southern, and Western bloodlines to produce the largest body and antler trophy available. We normally only harvest mature deer in this area and your experienced guide will help with the scoring of each animal on the hoof. Your chances of harvesting a trophy whitetail are much greater in this type of hunting. We also offer hunting out of the preserve for Southern whitetail deer and any size doe or buck can be taken at the hunter's choice. Our whitetail hunting in the afternoon is done out of a very luxurious and comfortable shooting house over food plots with a variety of supplemental and attractive forage. We usually hunt out of ladder stands in the mornings that are located in the woods or along a trail or road to ensure an opportunity at an animal when it is moving from place to place. A minimum of two days of hunting is recommended for whitetail hunting.
Fallow Deer
Fallow deer are originally from Europe and come in more color phases than any other deer species including brown with white spots, solid white, and chocolate to black. The fallow deer are often hunted like whitetails in the morning and evenings but they can also be stalk hunted and hunted safari style. The antlers of the fallow deer are palmate and can reach great lengths and body weight is usually 150 to 225lbs. Double J is one of the few ranches in Alabama that offers fallow deer hunting and the rut is usually from late October to early November. Fallow deer seasons and laws are the same in Alabama as whitetail deer so please see whitetail hunting.
Elk
Double J has one of the largest Elk herds in Alabama and has concentrated on trophy genetics from giant elk in the West to produce some of the best trophies available in the Southeast. Elk at Double J usually weigh between 700 and 850lbs and sport 6x6 to 8x8 racks. Elk hunting at Double J is usually done in the Western style by riding and stalking to call up or ambush a bull. The calling method usually works the best during the rut, which runs from early October to late November. The Elk seasons and laws in Alabama are the same as whitetail deer but do not count as one of your bucks for the year.
Red Stag
Red Stag are similar to Elk but with a dark red coat, slightly smaller bodies, and often shorter antler beams with more tines that crown at the top. Red Stag are originally from Europe and often roar during the rut instead of bugle like elk. There are a variety of ways to hunt for Red Stag and can be hunted like any of the other species according to the hunter’s preferences. Red Stag have the same seasons and laws as whitetail deer in Alabama but do not count as one of your bucks.
Predators
Coyote, bobcat, foxes, and raccoons may be added to any big game hunt for free or added to any overnight stay for $100. Your guide can call in these animals with an electronic call or mouth call but there is no guarantee on any predator hunts.
Upland Bird Hunting
Each bird hunting trip begins with a round of skeet shot over our beautiful lake at a variety of angles to get warmed up. All of our upland bird hunting is done with German Shorthair or English Pointers and English Cocker Spaniels for flushing and retrieving. Our fields are groomed for easy walking and clear shots. Any mix of bird species can be arranged on a single hunt and birds are very active and fast flying. A guide will work the dogs and lead the hunt while another follows in an ATV for transportation, refreshments, supply container, and bird collection. Your own dogs are welcome if you like but not at the same time as our dogs. We are a licensed fowl hunting preserve and our upland bird hunting seasons run from October 1st through March 31st.
Continental Bird Hunts
This is a chance for you and your friends to have a lot of fast flying action without much trouble. Each client is set up on a stand and hundreds of pheasants are sent flying by. There are guides present to hand out refreshments and retrieve birds. Duck hunting can also be done this way but clients are set up on the edge of a pond. Your own dogs are welcome. The seasons run from October 1st through March 31st but book early for these group events.
Turkey Hunting
Double J is blessed with a large flock of Eastern Turkeys and there have been some very large gobblers taken. A guide will assist you during all turkey hunts to put you right in the action. Most turkey hunting is done by locating the turkeys early in the morning with mouth calls, then yelping them up to shooting range from the ground. Blinds and decoys are often used to increase the chances of harvest. Turkeys can also be harvested by ambushing them, or sitting in a feeding area in the evening and getting a shot. Turkey season at Double J runs from March 16th through April 30th and there is a limit of five turkeys per hunter

Double J offers some of the best lodging and hunting in the Southeast.
All overnight stays include meals, open bar in the evening, guide, field transportation, refreshments, fishing, guide dogs, skinning and quartering of the game.
